Thasunda Brown Duckett Named CEO of TIAA
Thasunda Brown Duckett hailing from JPMorgan Chase, overseeing almost 5,000 branch networks, 40,000 employees, and over $600 billion in deposits has been asked to be president and chief executive of TIAA. Ms. Duckett is wanting to focus on closing the wealth gap between white and black communities in the United States. At Chase she pushed to improve financial literacy among its customers, and is looking to continue this work at TIAA. She will be officially starting at TIAA on May 1st. Source
Melvin Capital Sees Over 50% Losses in January
The hedge fund Melvin Capital bet against Gamestop in January, and lost 53% in the record rally for Gamestop. Gamestop finished January 400% higher, with the total year gain at 1,625%. Melvin's assets stand at approximately $8 billion (including emergency funding of $3 billion to shore up finance) which is down from $12.5 billion at the beginning of the year. Source
Flu Disappears With Covid-19 Pandemic Protocols
Statistically, February is the flu season's peak, but this year the flu has almost completely disappeared. Due to the protocols practiced to combat the coronavirus- along with a push for more people to be vaccinated against the flu, experts are saying numbers are lower than they have been in decades. The CDC says that this season is a record low based on their twenty five year old tracking system, with several states having no confirmed flu cases. Source
Johnson & Johnson Release New Covid-19 Vaccine
Johnson & Johnson released a single-dose Covid-19 Vaccine, making it the third available in the United States along with Moderna and Pfizer. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the leading official for Infectious Disease in the U.S. has encouraged Americans to get any of the available vaccines. Dr. Fauci, gives the newest addition a thumbs up, by expressing he "would take it." Currently, approximately 14% of Americans have been vaccinated. With a new administration in office and a third vaccine available, the plan is to have every American inoculated by July. Source
Maia Chaka Named First Black Female Game Official By NFL
Maia Chaka, a Virginia Beach physical education and health teacher for at-risk youth has been asked to officially join the NFL. She is only the second female referee in the NFL. Sarah Thomas was the first woman to officiate in a Super Bowl this past February. Chaka says she has "been grinding for so long at this, it is just an honor." When asked what it takes to be a good referee, Chaka stated, “patience, being able to listen, confidence to make a call, being decisive, and how you recover from making mistakes.”
Covid Resource Tool Launched By CDC
Many Americans have tried to find the Covid-19 vaccine. For many, it has proven extremely challenging over the past months. The CDC, Castlight Health and Boston Children's Hospital have partnered together to create a tool that allows individuals to search for vaccine providers in near-by locations. The tool was built on the foundation of vaccineFinder.org. The vaccine tool will also provide inventory data and location(s). However, a lot relies on manual input from volunteers to update the information to maintain its accuracy.
